Project

Was a fan made Pokémon game set in the Galar region where gym’s compete against each other in the spirit of competition similar to soccer and football. Here the player takes control of a Gym and manages the team much like a typical sports franchise mode.

In The Game

After players selected a team they were introduced to their gym leader from the main line Pokémon game who would give them a tour around the office, showing off the various menu items. They can then hire/fire trainers from their team roster who each had their own Pokémon they raised and bonded with.

In Pokémon the monsters are represented by level and would always get higher as the game progressed, but here their overall power is represented by their bond with their trainer. The more they train and win the higher their bond grow, but suffering multiple losses starts to drain their bond.

During the week players set which characters will focus on training, traveling and scouting upcoming talent while a set roster will be used to face off against next years new recruits/challengers. The gyms trainers can only use Pokémon of the gyms type in these battles as well, giving a slight handicap for the challenger. This setup the player being able to get a good representation of while trainers they will want to draft at the end of the season to add to their team in the following season, acting almost as a college level scouting in real life. At the end of each week the players team then faces off against their weekly opponent, using their Pokémon in 1 on 1 battles until one team is decaled the victor.

After 18 regular season matches/weeks the league playoffs occur where they compete to be crowned the league champion. During the off season the player must resign players to new contracts, draft promising new rookies, and say good bye to retiring trainers. During this time those that have remained on the team can be instructed to train or explore, when out exploring various regions the trainer has the chance to catch a new Pokémon to increase their fighting capacity.

Work / Results

The game was solo developed by me and created entirely out of 2D assets as a simple point and click sports team manager. I used the project as a means of better understanding the UI and widget system in Unreal Engine 4. The base gameplay loop was fully developed and more Pokémon and trainers were being implemented into the game before I cancelled it’s development in favor of Hex Battle, a game where the IP would be my very own and continue my exploration of the Unreal Engine.
